Amateur Photography

This poster by Burkhard Mangold seems just right for summer. It is in the collection of the Museum of Applied Culture, Vienna.

Now that's simply marvelous on a number of levels!

Yes, it is. The cdiagonals in the omposition are wonderful. The sunlight and shadows seem to flicker as you look at the image. And what kind of camera would it have been in 1908? Finding books on Swiss artists is difficult here. I did a series about Marguerite Burnat-Provins and was lucky to be able to read French. But most material about Mangold is in German, which limited me.

I would like to learn more about Mangold and Jugendstil ... do you have a title or two I can look at? German I can help with and would post something at the 5fingerplätze' for you then ...

Two that sound promising are "Burkhard Mangold: Rheinbilder" by Andrea Vokner, published by Merian, Basel: 2003 and "Zwischen Jugendstil Und Moderne" by Hortensia von Rode, published by Freiwillige Basler: 1992.
