Take La Notte. Although Jeanne Moreau's role is much bigger than Monica Vitti's, she can't hold the viewer like Vitti does - even while stuck in that annoying black wig! I've read that Moreau was quite disappointed at the way the film turned out. The comment that "Monica Vitti was Antonioni's collaborator on the movies they made together.
